The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and Portuguese and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.
More than just an honor roll, SHH serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
We would like to shed light on the history of the name that was chosen for our school chapter. During the Mexican Revolutionary war, while soldiers were occupied in battle, a group of women/female soldiers banded together to support these men. These women bravely risked their lives often times joining in battle alongside the men. Eventually, many of them were respected by their counterparts and even seen as equals. Adelita is a spinoff from the original term, soldadera. This means soldier. The name was originally meant to signify action and inspiration. To this day, the name is used to describe any woman who struggles and fights for her life.
The Spanish Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953, for the students of North American secondary schools; and this chapter is due to the efforts of The World Language Department of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy who is established it in 2021. The name of this chapter is Las Adelitas. Our motto is: “Todos a una”. Our colors are red and gold. Our insignia and seal are those of the mother association.
